Testo in Inglese

Essentially, his work has crossed the periods: the first a youthful phase that committed him to a poetic, pictorial-musical of Kleeiana reminiscence, a second phase of a citation of mythological recovery, and a third phase of intimate tastes with a strong recovery of the memory. He currently lives and works in his native city.

The thought of Angelo Cortese

In this phase of my life I am tormented by two different problems: the former being of ethical and philosophical nature, the latter of linguistic and instrumental type. As a result, at present, I am deeply concerned in the reclaiming of the human body, as the very core of the human being. Since the times of the avant-garde movements, the figurative culture has progressively abandoned the correct consideration of the human figure, in favor of a frenetic concept of reality. A straight-line escape towards the external world has become the only approach to search the way to knowledge. The scientistic vision - largely common in the Western Civilization - on the one hand, and superficial interpretations of Eastern Philosophies on the other hand, have opened the way to the search of an abstract and mental kind of Nirvana. At the same time this has caused the destruction of the centralness of the human body, absurdly trying to carry out the whole experience out of it. On the contrary I am directed by a Christic feeling towards the physicalness of the shapes. I think that the human body can be the right answer, the correct way to penetrate both the micro and the macro worlds and to get to the complete fulfilment of the spirit. With reference to the language I want to be more and more respectful of the Ikon, that is the metaphorical body epitomizing the idea. An ikon should not necessarily represent religious themes, but it is definitely a holy symbol because it is real. Being respectful of the ikon means to follow the liturgy of making. The building up of the final shape will be carried out through a particular technical timing and a series of stratifications. The wooden stand, the canvas, the first setting-procedures with a mixture of boiled oil and lime on the canvas, the artist's marks, the first signs of the spiritual and physical surface and - after that - the triumph of light showing the shape in the half-shade. However, a description like this cannot be the solution to the problem, because the spiritual route is unpredictable. Unfortunately, in our times, after the breaking of the alchemic initial rites, the wide range of expressions and - aboveall - a sort of general improvisation are the dominating features. In a cultural background like this, characterized by extreme confusion, it is only possible to record a sort of artificial language experimentalism: on the one hand globalization movements with their flat, inhuman symbols; on the other hand barren and mannered academicism without any spirituality. In a world where numbers and facts are the most important values, the final word is once again in the artist's mouth. The artist is able to recognize the archetypes and consequently he walks closely along the circular route of the soul.
